a zoo

we all of us
are in a zoo.

colorful and drab,
ferocious and feeble,
dangerous and delicate,
caged, sterile, safe.
we lounge within our confines,
are watched
and duly noted by our ‘caretakers,’
and sleep.
we peer at one another through the glass,
curious–confused–
observing one another’s
noise and violence
from a muffled distance.
the tumbling savannah haunts our dreams,
our nights shake the old instincts out of our brains
and we prowl, strut, and saunter,
flutter, dive, and sail
through the verdant green
of a long primal memory.

then…
we wake.
