pick at the stitches

the past is a shadow
that’s sewn to your heels.
pick at the stitches.
see how it feels.
tear at the sutures
and sever the threads,
or tie it up tauter
and knot it instead.
it clings to you tighter
the harder you fight.
it lurks in the background.
it eats up the night.
you’re put in a corner
to chew on its scraps,
you pace out the night.
you pluck at its traps.
it hides in back alleys
and trails at your steps,
it looks over your shoulder,
it sleeps on your chest.
and all of the while
it’s sewn to your heels. . .
pick at the stitches.
see how it feels.
